Boston Kyphosis Brace

Boston Kyphosis Brace

Description

The Boston Kyphosis Brace is a spinal orthosis (TLSO) designed for the treatment of hyperkyphosis, a condition in which the thoracic spine has an excessive backward curvature (>50°). The brace is primarily used in growing children and adolescents to correct posture, reduce curvature, and prevent further progression.

Hyperkyphosis most commonly presents as postural kyphosis or Scheuermann’s kyphosis. Postural kyphosis is typically posture-related and involves no structural changes to the spine, while Scheuermann’s kyphosis is characterized by wedge-shaped vertebrae and is seen primarily in boys aged 8–13. In Scheuermann’s kyphosis, brace treatment can be an effective method as long as the skeleton is still growing.

When the Boston Kyphosis Brace is professionally fitted and used as prescribed, it can contribute to improved spinal alignment, reduced deformity, and prevention of future problems. Studies of specially designed kyphosis braces have shown an average in-brace correction of over 15°, underscoring the potential of brace treatment when properly indicated.
