Spring Loaded – offloading and extension assistance in one knee orthosis
Spring Loaded is an innovative knee orthosis that combines dynamic offloading with active support in extension. The orthosis is developed for patients with patellofemoral or multicompartmental osteoarthritis, but can also be used for quadriceps weakness and other extensor deficits.
Unlike traditional knee orthoses, Spring Loaded uses an integrated spring mechanism that absorbs and stores energy as the knee flexes. During extension, the energy is returned to assist the quadriceps and ease movement. At the same time, the design helps reduce the load on the knee joint, particularly in the patellofemoral compartment, which has a direct pain-relieving effect.
The adjustable Power Dial system makes it possible to tailor the degree of offloading to the patient’s individual needs. According to the manufacturer, at maximum setting the biomechanical offloading corresponds to up to 20 kg of body weight across the entire knee joint.
Spring Loaded is designed to provide support during activities where the knee joint is subjected to high loads, for example when the patient stands up or walks up or down stairs. Studies show reduced joint forces and lower quadriceps activity as well as marked pain relief compared with other orthoses.
Spring Loaded is available in five sizes for the right and left leg and can also be custom made from a 3D scan.
Spring Loaded is ideal for:
- Patellofemoral osteoarthritis
- Multicompartmental and tricompartmental knee osteoarthritis
- Cartilage damage in the patella
- Anterior knee pain, including patellofemoral pain syndrome
- Extensor deficits and quadriceps weakness, for example after injuries to the quadriceps or patellar tendon, patella fractures or tibial plateau injuries.
